Siew Hoong Wah, a master's student from Malaysia at the School of Physics and Astronomy, came to Shanghai Jiao Tong University after graduating from high school. During his undergraduate studies, he achieved excellent academic results and received many awards and scholarships. After entering the master's stage, he mainly focused on scientific research while maintaining strong academic performance. In addition, he also actively participated in volunteer service at the School's Guangqi Observatory, contributing to astronomy outreach.

向往中国

He speaks fluent Mandarin, thanks to being immersed in Chinese-language education from an early age. After graduating from high school, it happened to be the time when top Chinese universities were recruiting students in Malaysia. Drawn to China, he ultimately decided to study physics at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

刻苦学习

He participated in the university-level, East China regional, and national competitions of the China Undergraduate Physics Academic Competition, achieving impressive results in all of them. He also joined the School's key social practice program, through which he visited the Ancient Observatory in Beijing and the Xinglong Station of the National Astronomical Observatories. With his strong academic performance and extensive experience in competitions and social practice, he successfully earned several scholarships, including the First-Class Undergraduate Scholarship in Astronomy, the Excellent International Student Scholarship, and the NAOC Scholarship from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which helped ease the financial burden on his family.

仰望心空

In his postgraduate studies, Siew Hoong Wah has continued to maintain excellent academic performance, but his focus has gradually shifted toward scientific research. However, he soon found that real research was more difficult than he had imagined. It was not uncommon for him to spend an entire week working hard, only to realize that there had been no actual progress, which could be frustrating. His main research direction is the study of the dynamics, chemical properties, and other physical quantities of hot gas in galaxy clusters using images and spectroscopic data from X-ray space telescopes. At present, he has one co-authored paper in which he is the second author, but he mentioned that the progress of his own project has been slow and full of difficulties. Nevertheless, he continues to seek solutions.

天文科普

With a strong passion for astronomy, he hopes to popularize interesting astronomical knowledge among the public. He also feels that this can inspire his enthusiasm for scientific research. As one of the volunteers at the Guangqi Observatory of the School of Physics and Astronomy at SJTU, he often explains astronomy-related knowledge to the public during observatory events. He believes that sharing his understanding of physics and astronomy with others is also a way to affirm his own learning in the field.

眺望未来

In the blink of an eye, Siew Hoong Wah has spent nearly five years studying and living in China. Looking back on this time, he is filled with emotion. During his days at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, he not only gained a wealth of professional knowledge but also learned how to get along with others and work in a team. As he approaches graduation, he once hesitated between pursuing further overseas studies and joining the workforce. Now, he's decided to return to Malaysia for data science-related work, starting a new chapter. Filled with passion and armed with his campus knowledge, he's confident of building a brilliant career in the future.
