Yasir Mehmood, a dedicated Pakistani lawyer, is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Chinese law at the distinguished KoGuan Law School of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. His choice to study in China stems not only from his admiration for the country’s profound cultural heritage——where ancient traditions gracefully coexist with cutting-edge modernity——but also from the personal stories and guidance of his elder sister and aunt, both of whom once studied at Chinese universities and were deeply inspired by the country’s academic atmosphere. Inspired by their accounts, Yasir is fueled by a sincere aspiration to connect the cultural and legal worlds of Pakistan and China through his academic endeavor.

    At KoGuan, he found an academic community that mirrors his own ambitions, emphasizing scholarly excellence, global engagement, and meaningful cross-cultural exchange. Ultimately, Yasir’s journey represents far more than a pursuit of advanced legal knowledge; it is a personal mission to foster understanding and cooperation between two great nations.

    Yasir Mehmood has embraced every opportunity to immerse himself in Chinese culture and society, enthusiastically building meaningful relationships within the local community despite his beginner-level Mandarin. His curiosity and openness have transcended language barriers, allowing him to truly connect with those around him.     In 2023, he participated in the Dragon Boat Festival organized by the International Students Service Center at SJTU, gaining a deeper appreciation for this vibrant cultural tradition. He also contributed to the International Week and International Cultural Festival held by the School of Humanities, where students from across the globe came together to celebrate their diverse heritage. These events not only empowered Yasir to proudly share elements of his own culture but also helped him appreciate the rich tapestry of China’s multicultural environment. 

    In the spring of 2024, Yasir took part in cultural excursions organized by the International Students Service Center, visiting the World Languages Museum at Shanghai International Studies University and exploring the Guangfulin Site Park. These immersive experiences offered invaluable insights into China’s history and cultural legacy, deepening his respect for the nation’s traditions. Through these encounters, Yasir has strengthened his dedication to fostering cross-cultural understanding and forging lasting connections within the dynamic academic community.

    Yasir Mehmood’s tenure at KoGuan Law School has been marked by outstanding academic performance and exemplary leadership. Maintaining an impressive GPA of 3.94/4.00, he has demonstrated unwavering dedication to mastering complex legal theories, while broadening his perspective on Chinese and international law through active participation in conferences and seminars. Beyond the classroom, Yasir represented Pakistan at SJTUMUN 2024 in the UNHCR Committee, where he skillfully articulated his country’s stance on issues of forced internal displacement. His thoughtful, solution-oriented engagement earned him the Honorable Mention Award and led to his subsequent selection to serve in the SJTUMUN Administration Committee——further evidence of his capacity to inspire global dialogue and cooperation. 

    Yasir’s visit to the Gubei Civic Center in Shanghai offered him unique insights into the local governance structure, highlighting the innovative integration of technology and transparency at the district level.     Yasir Mehmood’s passion for cultural exploration was further illuminated during the 2024 Mid-Autumn Festival Experience organized by the International Students Service Center. Immersed in one of China’s most cherished art forms, he received an unforgettable introduction to Peking Opera under the guidance of the esteemed Ms. Wu Zhao. Alongside fellow international students, Yasir practiced foundational techniques like "Liang Xiang" and "Water Sleeves," culminating in the performance of the renowned aria "The Ode to Pear Blossoms." This encounter deepened his admiration for the elegance and complexity of Peking Opera. The festival also offered him hands-on insight into mooncake making, allowing him to appreciate the culinary and cultural significance of the Mid-Autumn Festival more profoundly. 

    In October 2024, Yasir participated in the "Exploring the Future City of Lingang and Feeling the New Vitality of China’s Urban Development" event, also organized by the International Students Service Center. Lingang, known as the "City of the Future," impressed Yasir with its cutting-edge technology and visionary urban design. Visits to the China-UK Low Carbon College, the China Maritime Museum, and the iconic Duoyun Books at Dishui Lake showcased China’s forward-looking achievements in sustainability, maritime heritage preservation, and innovative urban planning. These experiences left him inspired by the country’s seamless integration of time-honored traditions and bold aspirations, enriching his understanding of China’s cultural legacy and expanding his perspective on its ambitious future.
